conduit architecture+design principals, Kobey Seale and Eric Ciskowski, performed as Project Managers for the Jim Wilson Architects designed and recently completed new recreation center for the youth of Albany, Texas. Known as “The Feed Store,” the approximately 5,300 square-foot facility functions as a safe and supervised facility where youth are welcomed to play, eat, study, or simply unwind. Ping-pong, foosball, and pool tables are mixed in with pinball and video games, flat-screen TVs, lounge areas, and reading nooks. Although the interior was left primarily open to allow flexibility in the building’s program, several “stations” were developed in the plan to encourage fellowship and provide a framework for other activities to build upon. In addition to a conference room, office, and restrooms, the facility also includes a full-service kitchen, multiple eating areas, a small coffee bar, and an outdoor cook shack. As a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the “Big Room,” students have access to computer stations and quiet study areas in “The Loft.” Corresponding with the local ranching and agricultural vernacular, the building has a distinctly agrarian look and feel, with exposed steel, Lueders stone, and corrugated metal as the main exterior elements. In response to the west Texas climate, included are deep overhangs and a large covered porch on the west end. The fenced grounds provide an area for outdoor events, basketball, and volleyball.
